Pounding needs a timed run in the Cranbourne Cup
Pounding was in good form having won at Group 3 level in the Autumn before finishing third in the Group 1 $3m Australian Cup. During the Spring however he has failed to regain the same form of the Autumn and has failed to finish in the placings in his following 5 starts.
Co-trainer Katherine Coleman has said that Poundings dip in form has arrived through a mixture of internal and external factors.
"He's probably been a little bit disappointing in some of his runs this prep, but in saying that, he's had excuses," Coleman, who trains Pounding in partnership with Peter Moody, said.
"He's had no issues but he's just been a bit unlucky and the races haven't been run to suit him.
"Last start at Flemington, the race wasn't run to suit him at all so we've just elected to bring him back in trip and keep him nice and fresh and happy at home."
Pounding most recently finished fourth to Group One Railway Stakes hopeful Forget You on Melbourne Cup day which was a race that demonstrated Coleman’s point.
Pounding chased the tearaway race leader, Sibaaq, with the pair tiring late and falling out of contention. Coleman identified that that was the usual race style of Pounding which had ultimately seen him come undone.
"Last start, when he got left by himself a long way out, it didn't really suit him at all," Coleman said.
"He almost just needs it to play out so he's the last one getting there.
"He can have a bit of a think about things at times.
"He can let down pretty well but just the timing of it needs to suit him as well as the race shape and pattern needs to go our way."
Pounding currently sits as an $11 chance to win the Group 3 Cranbourne Cup with jockey Luke Nolan booked to ride.
