Winners and Past Results for the Australian Cup.
The Australian Cup, hosted by the Victoria Racing Club, is a Group 1 open race held under weight for age conditions.
The race has elite gallopers from across the country head to Flemington Racecourse during the autumn racing carnival to compete in the premier staying event run over a distance of 2000 meters.
The Australian Cup has a long and proud history with $1,500,000 at stake for the lucky winner on Super Saturday. The event has produced many stars that have stamped their authority on the Australian turf over the years. These include the likes of Lonhro, Makybe Diva, Northerly, Octagonal, and Durbridge in recent times.
The first Australian Cup was held in 1863 as a principal race over 18 furlongs. The inaugural event was won by Barwon. A horse named Woodman won two consecutive cups in 1865 and 1866, a feat repeated by Welkin Prince in 1962 and 1963, Craftsman in 1965-66, and Vo Rogue in 1989-90. Other champion thoroughbreds to win the premier staying event include Better Loosen Up, Dulcify, and Leilani.
Over the years the distance in the Australian Cup has varied from 3600 meters to its current 2000 meters since 1964.
Jockey Darren Beadman has the distinction of steering 3 horses to victory in the Cup. These include Let's Elope in 1992, Saintly in 1996, and Lonhro in 2004. The unbeatable Makybe Diva holds the record time of 1:58.73, not surprising for the triple Melbourne Cup champion, who eclipsed Northerly's timing of 1:59.40.
The Australian Cup is held on a day of stakes races which includes the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap, leaving punters with much to look forward to. The Group 2 St. George Stakes has proved to be a great lead up to the Australian Cup with many winners scoring a St. George Stakes / Australian Cup double. Recent successful gallopers to achieve the feat include Dane Ripper in 1998, Istidaad in 1999, Northerly in 2001, Lonhro in 2004, and Pompeii Ruler in 2007. Thesio came close to winning in 2009 after lifting the St. George Stakes earlier in the autumn.
The Victoria Racing Club has made great efforts to make the Australian Cup one of the most prestigious and lucrative events in its racing calendar.
Every year the strongest of stayers continue to blaze the tracks at Flemington with their eye on the million dollar prize money and the opportunity to become the champion horse of the year.
