Racing first commenced at Cranbourne with a two day meeting held on 22nd & 23rd April 1867. One of the Champions of the Turf, Manikato won his first start at Cranbourne as a two-year-old in 1978.
Manikato went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper Stakes, Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas all in 1978.

Cranbourne Racecourse has long runs to the first turns in all race starts. There is an uphill run from the 600m to the winning post. The track is irrigated and well-grassed and races well all-year round. Soil type is sandy loam.
Cranbourne Racetrack has a course circumference of 1700 metres and has a home straight 300 metres long.
