Winners and Past Results for the Premiers Cup
The Premiers Cup is held in May at the Doomben Racecourse every year. Horses travel over 2200 metres in this Group 3 race organised by Brisbane Racing Club as part of the Winter Racing Carnival, and is run under open handicap conditions.
First run in 2006, the Premier's Cup offers $125,000 to the winner. The race usually takes place alongside the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes, the Listed Chief De Beers Quality and the Listed The Phoenix.
Doomben Racecourse is operated by the Brisbane Racing Club, and is located seven kilometres from the city centre, walking distance from Eagle Farm Racecourse. It is an oval track with sharp turns, which benefits horses that manage to secure the inside rail. The track circumference is of 1715 meters, with a 350 meter straight. This grass track is known to provide advantages to the front runners and pace setters.
The Premiers Cup usually fields horses who are predominantly handy local stayers. The lead up race to this event is the Group 3 Chairman's Handicap, which is run over 2020 meters. The Chairman's Handicap is usually held a fortnight before at the same track as part of Brisbane 's winter racing carnival. Larry's Never Late in 2010 placed second in the Chairman's Handicap before placing third in the Premier's Cup, while Fulmonti in 2008 and Mandela in 2007, both won the Chairman's Handicap, before placing third here. Fulmonti continued his form to place second in the 2008 Group 2 Brisbane Cup run over 2400 meters, two weeks later at Eagle Farm Racecourse, as part of the same carnival. The Premier's Cup is a great form guide for the other staying races scheduled during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Shuffle the Cash in 2011, placed seventh in the Chairman's Cup, before winning here. He went on to compete in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup held at Eagle Farm, where he finished fifth.
