Oliver fined for final race ride
Oliver rode Munhamek in the final race of the day at Ascot and from barrier 17 rode his last ever career ride for luck and was able to get over the line first. With the crowd in raptures Oliver rose from his saddle to salute before the finish line and was cited by stewards.
Officials handed Oliver a final $500 fine after he complete a winning treble in the last three races of the day.
Heading into the final race Oliver had been the winner in the previous two races on the day at Ascot and was looking to complete his final race day treble in the $1.5m Damien Oliver Gold Rush.
The crowd was bustling heading into the final race and with Munhamek struggling to find a run the crowd popped when they saw Oliver find a gap and weave through the field to overcome Ripcord in the last.
The stewards weren’t getting carried away in the romance of the day though, and effected the rule to the letter of the law - issuing Oliver a $500 fine for celebrating prior to the winning post.
Also from the Gold Rush, jockey Brad Rawiller (Resortman) was cited for careless riding near the 250m mark, for shifting outwards and impacting fellow runner Hot Zed.
In an action packed race another incident at the 150m mark was the focus of an inquiry, with Clint Johnston-Porter (Ripcord) initially charged for careless riding due to interference with Massimo, but they later withdrew the charge after hearing more evidence. They found there was movement outwards from Comfort Me and Karli's Karma that was a factor in the incident.
