We have to travel back seven years to remember the run where Cassidy partnered with the Great Mare Winx and produced a huge off the pace run at the Sunshine Coast and the veteran hoop was back in the winners enclosure saturday after producing a similar run in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap aboard Le Gai Soleil.
In running Cassidy traveled near last throughout the Glasshouse and could have been having flashbacks of Winx’s famous off the pace victory in the Sunshine Coast Guineas when cutting through the field, from a position even he didn’t expect to start from.
Le Gai Soleil was originally listed as an emergency for the race, however scratchings due to the heavy 10 surface gave Cassidy and trainer John O’Shea the chance to win the black type contest.
Under the lights at the Sunshine Coast, Cassidy was able to produce a long sustained run to knock off late leader Dzsenifer to win.
“I think the really wet, testing track, played into her hands,” Cassidy said.
“I went back and watched her races and I could see she gets back, but I didn’t expect her to be that far back.
“They did run along but so I thought the main thing was from the 600m to get moving and get to the outside.
“She came out and went bang, I was in a tussle with the leader, but she put paid to them.” Cassidy said.
On the night jockey’s realised the inside barriers were struggling with the heavy going Cassidy saw the opportunity to run the perfect race.
“I think if you drew one here today, it was bad, but I sat out there four-deep with cover because they raced compact,” he said.
Cassidy rode a double on the card with victory aboard Renouf earlier on the card.
