In a race won last year by Regal Power there are a host of big names set to go head to head in a chance to win this year. The likes of Russian Camelot, Arcadia Queen, Verry Elleegant, Melody Belle and Sir Dragonet to name a few vying for the title.
Behemoth is one of the top runners in betting at the moment ($12) and returns to the track this weekend in the Listed Durbridge Stakes at Morphettville over 1100m.
This isn’t a chips in scenario for trainer David Jolly who believes the Listed event in South Adelaide could be the perfect springboard for 5 year old gelding to put on a show in 2021.
“We are rapt to be able to kick him off in a race closer to home because we don‘t always get that chance and while I think he will be very hard to beat, it‘s not the end of the world if he doesn’t win,” Jolly said.
“Saturday is a no pressure run and he doesn’t have to be winning to warrant going where we are going.
“It‘s a bit like a second trial for him, a good hit out closer to home so then we can tighten the screws in three weeks time in the Futurity Stakes.”
Currently second in voting with over 5,000 votes Behemoth showed real talent during the spring taking out the Group 3 Spring Stakes before winning the Memsies and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Group 1 level.
Arcadia Queen, Behemoth, Verry Elleegant and Greysful Glamour lead voting at the moment and are likely to get a start in the $5m race. In hot pursuit are Probabeel, Sir Dragonet and Russian Camelot who would be hoping for a few more votes to cement there places in the starting gates.
