Geelong and Newcastle Tips and Best Bets
Spring is in full flight at Pro Group Racing, and on the eve of the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington we’ve found the winners for Friday racing around the country, headlined by the Provincial Showcase meeting at Newcastle.
NEWCASTLE
RAIL: True
WEATHER : Good
R1 GTS LAWN PRIDE 3&4YO BM 68 1600m - No.7 Orzala
Sticking with the Sydney metropolitan form of No. 7 Orzala here. The mare was impressive resuming by a horse which has since come to town and won well, before having to race off the rails on a fence day at Canterbury. A 7 day back up and the wide open spaces of Newcastle make her a great betting option third up.
R2 KLOSTER MOTOR GROUP F&M MAIDEN HANDICAP 1400m - No.2 Ahuriri
No. 2 Ahuriri made an eye-catching debut at the Sandown Hillside track, producing a withering run before just missing on the line in a good strength maiden. The Waller stable has wasted no time in bringing the filly to Sydney and with a tickover trial since, should be winning this and onto better things over Spring.
R5 AUSTRALIAN BLOODSTOCK CAMERON HANIDCAP – GROUP 3 1500m - No.14 Spangler
The value play of the day comes up here. The Kris Lees stable loves making their mark on Cameron Handicap Day and No.14 Spangler will do just that in this race. Was slow out first up before hitting the line well wide at Rosehill and no returns to it’s home track and is unbeaten second up. The $8.50 around in early markets looks juicy to us.
R6 YARRAMAN PARK STUD TIBBIE STAKES – FILLIES & MARES GROUP 3 1400m - No.4 Razeta
Could almost copy and paste the above here, but Gibbons & Lees, 2nd up at Newcastle off a nice resumption. Don’t think, just bet (responsibly) on No. 4 Razeta.
R7 SHARP OFFICE NEWCASTLE GOLD CUP – GROUP 3 2300m - No.7 Sir Lucan
The third of the features is one of the classic lead ups to the Group 1 Metropolitan and gosh, we’re tempted by the Kris Lees threepeat here after Kalapour was heavily backed before being caught up in some ugly backwash at Wyong. But going to have an eachway play at Sir Lucan. Couldn’t find the lead first up at Caulfield after being well backed, now finds a reasonable spot on pace and can improve up in distance here to give this field a shake.
