Luke Currie ready for wins in Australia
After completing a two year campaign in Hong Kong, jockey Luke Currie is heading back to Australia and is hungry to get back to winning ways after an early injury that resulted in a fractured back kept him away from the race track for a number of weeks.
Currie did recover from his broken back and concussion and was able to amass a total of 20 winners during his campaign, but it was clear that the Aussie was struggling to get going in Asia and it was time for a change.
The Group One winner will return to Australia with a positive mentality and believes his time in Hong Kong has been a good learning curve.
"I can look back and worry about those things but I'm trying to look forward," Currie said.
"I've been riding a long time and like any jockey I've had tough runs but it's magnified (in Hong Kong) and you can't just take a step back to the reserves and get a few kicks.
"There's a lot of things I would do differently if I was (in Hong Kong) again but I've learnt a lot from it.
"In that way it's been a good experience."
Currie, who will be back in action at Flemington this coming Wednesday, confirmed his weight and fitness are both in good condition, believing he'll comfortably be able to ride at 54kg.
"One thing I have done here is work really hard on my fitness and my weight, so I'll be able to go home and ride relatively light, which makes it a bit easier to go to a few more meetings and not be killing myself trying to lose weight," he said.
"I'll be able to spread myself around a little bit and try to pick up winners. That's one thing I have learnt here - winners create winners - it doesn't matter who you're riding for, people want to put you on.
"My aim will be to ride as many winners as I can, wherever it is, and build off that."
Currie did have a brief spell in Australia earlier this year when he rode Mr Brightside to victory in the $5m All Star Mile.
