Ascot Racecourse is located just 8km from Perth 's CBD, and is run by Perth Racing. Perth Racing was known as the Western Australian Turf Club, and has been operating races at their Ascot track and Belmont Park Racetrack for over 150 years. Ascot is known as the Grand Old Lady of Australian Racecourses and is one of the toughest tracks in the world, especially with the uphill, 294 meter straight. Home to a number of great races throughout the year, the Ascot Racecourse boasts of a very modern track with an innovative well-drained turf.
First run in 1985, the Prince Of Wales Stakes usually finds horses coming in from their spells and looking to begin their summer campaigns. The field is usually made up of the best local gallopers, but isn't surprising to find one or two horses from the eastern states. Horses that run well here usually go on to compete in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes.
Waratah's Secret, the 2011 winner, came in from placing second in the Listed Northerly Stakes, held at Ascot in mid of October. Prior to his victory in the Northerly Stakes he won the Listed Birthday Stakes, held at Ascot in early October. After his win in the Prince of Wales Stakes, he went on place third in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes in the first week of November. He then finished fourth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes also held at Ascot . Waratah's Secret also won this event in 2010, and is one of only four horses to win this event twice.
One of the other horses to win this event twice is Idyllic Prince, who achieved this feat in 2007 and 2009. He also placed second in 2010 and third in 2008. Secret Remedy achieved the double win in 2000 and 2001, while Century Blazer won in 1995 and 1996.
Some of the other notable winners of this event are Miss Andretti in 2005, Golden Delicious in 2004, Double Blue in 1998, Pago's King in 1992, and Carry A Smile in 1989.
The Prince Of Wales Stakes is usually run on the same day as the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne.
