Easter Cup

Winners and Past Results For The Easter Cup.

The Easter Cup, hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club, is a Group 3 Australian Thoroughbred open race held under handicap conditions over a distance of 2000 metres.

The race has elite gallopers from across the country head to Caulfield to compete in the premier staying event run over a distance of 2000 metres.

The Easter Cup has a long and proud history with $150,000 at stake for the lucky winner. It is held annually at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne in April. The event has produced many stars that have stamped their authority on the Australian turf over the years. These include Paddy O'Reilly, Fanjura, Miss Maren, Like It Is, and Maldivian in recent times.

The conditions of the Easter Cup race are open handicap which means there is usually a big contingent of horses vying for acceptance where a few top liners may usually bypass this race.

From 1949-1961, this event was known as the Sandown Cup. The group 3 has produced several racing champions such as 2008 Cox Plate winner Maldivian, Lord Palmerston in 1990, Adolescence in 2001, and Show Barry in 2005.

The Easter Cup is a middle distance staying race that takes place on Easter Sunday and more often is simply a field of handy horses, rather than a top class affair. The reason for this is that most of the elite gallopers will be in Sydney at this time of the year for the big money races on offer at the autumn racing carnival. Litmus was the winner of the Easter Cup in the year 2000. As most of the top liners will be in Sydney for the big money event, so the major focus is on the Sydney autumn carnival. In 2007, Maldivian won the Easter Cup race before going on to win the Group 1 Cox Plate the following year. In 2008, Maldivian came back strongly to lift the Easter Cup once again.

While dealing with the Easter Cup races it is better to follow the country cup's circuit or looking for horses rising well through the grades. So before you bet on any horse, it is better to just update yourselves with the grades of the horses you are betting on.
