The Easter Cup has a long and proud history with $200,000 at stake for the lucky winner. It is held annually at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne in April. The event has produced many stars that have stamped their authority on the Australian turf over the years. These include Paddy O'Reilly, Fanjura, Miss Maren, Like It Is, and Maldivian in recent times.

The conditions of the Easter Cup race are open handicap which means there is usually a big contingent of horses vying for acceptance where a few top liners may usually bypass this race.

From 1949-1961, this event was known as the Sandown Cup. The group 3 has produced several racing champions such as 2008 Cox Plate winner Maldivian, Lord Palmerston in 1990, Adolescence in 2001, and Show Barry in 2005.
