SAJC Sires Produce Stakes
Winners and Past Results for the SAJC Sires Produce Stakes
The South Australian Jockey Club hosts a number of group races during the Adelaide autumn racing carnival, which includes the SAJC Sires Produce Stakes held in April.
Top two year olds compete over 1600 metres of the Morphettville race track under set weight conditions in the Group 3 race for a shot at a purse of $115,000.
Since 2010, the Sires Produce Stakes is held on the newly formed Morphettville Parks Racecourse. The race is the first group mile race for two year olds during the autumn carnival where young horses have the opportunity to prove their ability to conquer the mile. The race has produced a few classy gallopers who have gone on to succeed as a three year old.
The 1200 M Group 3 SA Breeders Stakes and The Jansz (National Stakes) held earlier at Morphettville are among the handy form guides and lead up races. Win For Wilson finished runner up in the 2011 Sires Produce Stakes and The Jansz as well while fourth placed Triple Asset won The Jansz. For several horses, the event may be their first attempt at the mile while some have moved on to conquer long distances. Rebel Raider, winner in 2008, won the Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby over 2500 metres as a three year old the following spring. Other horses to excel include Silent Surround who placed well in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes and Group 2 Wakeful Stakes at the Flemington track as a three year old during the Melbourne spring carnival.
Two year olds may enter the fray after a run in listed and handicap events around the region. 2011 winner of the Sires Produce Stakes, Cute Emily, won a handicap event over 1200 metres at Caulfield. Third placed Cash Bound won a 1000 metre handicap in his previous outing.
Norwich was the first winner of the Sires Produce Stakes which was held as a principal race. It was promoted to Group 2 in 1979 but was later downgraded to Group 3 in 1992.
Notable winners over the years include Kingston Spirit in 1992, Clay Fighter in 1998, and Anamato in 2006. Rebel Raider, winner of the 2008 SAJC Sires Produce Stakes remains among the most successful horses to win two derbies and other group races over the years.
2013 SA Sires Produce Stakes
The Voice was a flat in the early stages and was content to lope along despite the urgings of jockey Paul Gatt. For all that, the pace was slow up front with White Roe taking them along at a lethargic tempo. Around the turn, The Voice was still cruising until he received a bump in the straight, which prompted him into action. The Voice finally got up to speed and put in a good effort in the final stages to record a win over Hurtle Murtle, who finished well after an ordinary run. The favourite Bulbula claimed third after struggling to get clear on the run home and she made little impression after eventually finding some racing room.
