It was a big Thursday for Winx and her connections as it was announced that the Queen of the Turf was pregnant whilst she also had a new grandstand unveiled in her honour at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
The stand, which cost over $45m to create, is capable of holding up to $7,500 racegoers and is the latest monument dedicated to Winx who is regarded in most circles as the greatest racehorse of all time.
Team Winx comprising trainer Chris Waller, jockey Hugh Bowman and owners Debbie Kepitis, Peter and Patty Tighe, and Elizabeth Treweeke who represented her late father, Richard Treweeke, were special guests of the Australian Turf Club at the new stand’s opening ceremony.
The ownership group could barely contain there excitement when confirming that Winx was in foal to champion sire Pierro with her offspring expected in the Spring of 2022.
“Winx is in foal, so far, so good,” Tighe said. “The team at the farm are more than happy with how everything is going.
“We get regular video updates about Winx’s progress, she looks a million bucks and is loving her life.”
Winx had been previously served by Group 1 winning I Am Invincible however after a complication free pregnancy the foal was still born leaving the owners to allow time from the Champion to recover from the ordeal.
Kepitis, was hopeful that 2022 would be more successful after the tragedy they had faced last year.
“Fingers crossed, next year we will have a lovely Pierro foal,” she said.
“Knowing Winx, she will carry that foal as well as she can. Let hope, for her sake, she can have the foal in spring time next year.”
ATC chairman Matt McGrath revealed the new Winx Stand is expected to generate more than $150 million in annual economic benefit to NSW and create 450 jobs.
“Winx was the people’s champion and now the people and especially general admission customers have a stand named forever in her honour,” McGrath said.
Royal Randwick was the location of Winx’s 33rd and final win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the stand forms a fitting tribute to one of the greatest winning streaks in horse racing history.
