Rothfire looked back near his best when making all in the Group 1 Stradbroke on Saturday before Alligator Blood came steamrolling home late to take out the Winter Carnival Showpiece.
Trainer Rob Heathcote confirmed that Rothfire had already headed to the spelling paddock after his strong third place finish on Saturday and revealed he is likely to be back in work around the end of the month.
Heathcote confirmed that the plan would for Rothfire then to be part of a strong stable line up to head to Victoria with Starantes and Prince Of Boom likely to travel south as well.
“I imagine we will be getting a rematch with Alligator Blood because they are also going down there, I see,” Heathcote said.
“He is already at Washpool Lodge now. He won’t be there too long because I don’t want him getting too big and gross, I don’t think he hit peak fitness until he got a few runs under his belt because he had such a lengthy run before that.”
Heathcote has been parrading a lot of his stables best in Sydney of late and is keen to get his best runners back down to Melbourne where he saw so much success with cult hero Buffering.
“I have been going to Sydney since the prizemoney went crazy there but I enjoy Melbourne, I am keen to try it out again,” he said.
“The 17th September has the Rupert Clarke over 1400m at Caulfield. The week before that is the Bobbie Lewis which is 1100m up the Flemington straight.
“It will be races like that, the Manikato and those things.
“There’s a chance he doesn’t handle that way of going but he could also be a good straight-track horse.”
Although no path has been confirmed for Rothfire yet Heathcote did confirm his campaign has numerous options still on the table.
