Winning the Group 2 contest in November, Sound will need to be at the top of his game once again when he tackles the Group 1 contest on Boxing Day.
His form that day was impressive as well as surprising when he defeated red hot favourite Spanish Mission over the 2400m at Caulfield and made it two Zipping Classic wins in two years for the Mike Moroney Stable.
After that performance Moroney dispatched Sound to their MataMata stable which he operates in partnership with Pam Gerard. It’s not an unfamiliar story for Sound having done a similar trip the past two years when running placings in the last two Auckland Cups over 3200m.
This year however Moroney has decided to boost Sound’s time in New Zealand transitioning the 8 year old earlier in order to tackle the weight for age Zabeel Classic at Group 1 level on Boxing Day.
The Auckland Cup remains the main target for the two time Zipping Classic winner however his run in the Group 2 as well as work in the yard after the race has meant there looks like there is little to lose for the stable.
“This is probably not his main target, but the way he won the Zipping, we thought it was worth throwing him in there,” Gerard said.
“Certainly if he could get a Group 1 at weight-for-age it really enhances his stallion career.”
Sound forms a three strong contingent for the Group 1 Zabeel Classic with Harlech and On The Rocks also set to line up for the Moroney / Gerard stable on Boxing Day.
