Two of Sydney’s best jockeys are to head across the world and will make up 50% of the Rest of The World racing team to take part in the the Shergar Cup at Ascot.
Kerrin McEvoy will be no stranger to riding in the UK and will take part in the international race series for a third time, while Jason Collett will be making his debut at the festival and his debut racing in the Northern Hemisphere as a whole.
The pair will travel to the UK at the start of August with the Shergar Cup taking place on the 6th of the month. There will be four international teams - UK, Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World as well as a Ladies team taking part in the Cup.
“It’s great to be going back, it’s always good to get back to Ascot,” McEvoy said.
“It’s an iconic racetrack and the Aussies and Kiwis had a bit of success during the Royal meeting so hopefully we can carry that on.
“It’s a great day, good fun, I’m looking forward to it.”
McEvoy was part of the teams that contested the Shergar Cup in 2015 and 2017 but failed to win the competition. Making his debut at the competition Jason Collett was understandably keen to get goin.
“It’s really exciting,” Collett said. “Ascot’s such a magnificent place it’s great to get the chance to ride there.
“I’ve ridden in Singapore, Macau and Mauritius but never in Europe.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do so, yeah. I’m very excited to have been given the opportunity.”
The Shergar Cup is contested over six races, most over different distances - Dash (5f), Sprint (6f), Mile (1m), Challenge (1m 4f), Classic (1m 4f) and Stayers (2m).
McEvoy and Collett will be joined in the Rest of the World team by French Jockey Christophe Lemaire and Japanese jockey Takeshi Yokoyama.
