BORDER HOPPING FOR BETTER CONDITIONS

Trainer Alex Rae is taking one of his stable stars away from his Cranbourne base and up to New South Wales in search for better ground after he feels a series of poor tracks is stopping him from getting the best out of his runner

The continued rain in Sydney looks set to draw Cranbourne trainer Alex Rae interstate to hunt for a well deserved breakthrough for star galloper Chief Altony in Saturday’s Listed Winter Stakes over 1400m at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Originally Rae had nominated Chief Altony in two races at this Saturday’s Caulfield card however he is now favouring a trip across state lines to compete in the Listed grade race at Randwick.

Chief Altony may be getting a reputation as a bit of a mudlark having run four times on the wet to win two and achieve two minor placings.

“The intention is to run him in the Winter Stakes but he is 20th in the order of entry so I am more positive than anything that he will get a run and hopefully we can give him a go,” Rae said.

“He really excels on rain affected ground and the options are there with the Benchmark 78 (on the same card) but the priority is the Winter Stakes where he can get some weight off his back and really give it a go.

“He deserves his chance in a race like that.”

Chief Altony is already going well this preparation finishing no worse than 4th in his five starts in the current campaign. He was most unlucky last time out where he came down the outside late to narrowly miss winning at Caulfield.

“He was very stiff,” Rae said.

“He is a get back run on horse and he gets himself in a spot of bother but geez he has been awfully unlucky on three or four occasions now.

“It will work out, I think there are positives of running on wet ground because runs open up a bit more.”

Chief Altony currently sits as a $15 shot to win the Listed Winter Stakes however a jockey is yet to be booked to ride Rae’s runner.
