It was one of the most thrilling finishes of the day as Neville Parnham trainer Neufbosc and Grant and Alana Williams trained Truly Great pulled clear 200m from home to fight out the finish.
Neufbosc had been in great form leading up to the race finishing second in the G.A. Towton Cup followed by a win in the A.T.A Stakes and carried that impressive form into the Perth Cup.
Likewise Truly Great had been in truly great form winning the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic and sealing a great year for the Williams team winning there 4th Group 1 of the year.
The pair jumped well settling in midfield side by side. Truly Great struggled to get any cover for the first 1000m and carrying the 60kg you could argue probably cost him the race covering the extra ground.
Heading into the home turn Truly Great peeled wide under Pike with Chris Parnham attaching Neufbosc to his his rump and following suit.
In the straight the pair pulled clear with Truly Great looking home before Neufbosc mounted his first assault which was seen off by the 5year old. Undeterred Parnham asked for another kick and gradually edged closer inside the last 50m pipping Truly Great by a nose in a race where even the race caller couldn’t split them.
It’s been a truly remarkable turnaround for Neufbosc who only landed in the west at the start of spring after joining the Parnham stable from Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig.
Considered an import horse never living up to the hype Parnham has got the 6yo gelding humming with 7 starts in black type racing with 3 wins and a placing in return.
