Mr Brightside wins the Memsies Stakes
When markets opened earlier in the week Mr Brightside was among a number of previous Group One winners sitting around the $4 mark in betting before a plunge towards the end of the week shifted 6yo gelding into a clear market leader at $2.60.
Mr Brightside was having his second run back after winning the PB Lawrence Stakes over an identical distance at the same track two weeks earlier however this time he would have to tackle the wide barrier of 15 if he was to win.
As the gates opened Mr Brightside, under the ride of Craig Williams, was forced to push forward from that wide barrier and looked to be in trouble early in the race having to settle for a three wide spot throughout the early stages of the race.
Heading past the 600m maker he would find a slight margin of cover behind Alligator Blood but remained three wide and still having to work hard to stay up on the speed with Annavisto posting a strong tempo.
As the runners entered the home turn Annavisto continued to crank the tempo however Alligator Blood, Princess Grace and Mr Brightside were beginning to loom large behind the long term leader.
Entering the home straight Annavisto would fall away and Mr Brightside would force his way to the lead. Princess Grace would mount a strong challenge from the inside rail while Alligator Blood would struggle to sustain the run on his first up appearance.
The main threat would come from Peter Moody trained I Wish I Win who managed to weave into the clear late and appeared to be travelling the best of the front four in the run in.
It would be Mr Brightside who would dig deep however and having travelled three wide throughout, forced to spend energy early when forced forward, who would find another gear to kick clear under Williams and win the Group One Memsies Stakes.
