The bookies struggled to split a handful of runners after the barrier draw on Tuesday with long time favourite Jamaea assigned Gate 8, King of Sparta receive Gate 13, I Am Lethal took the horror draw of Gate 21 and other market fancies Shihonka and Starman drawing 9 and 7 respectively.
Co-trainer of Jamaea, Luke Price said he is happy to leave the fate of his runner to the experience of Sydney hoop Tommy Berry in the $2m feature.
After the draw Berry and Price saw the price of Jamaea shift from $5.50 into $5 after receiving the midfield draw whilst I Am Lethal moved from $5.50 to $6.50 following the carpark draw.
Price decided to scratch Jamaea from the New Year’s Day card at Doomben but insisted his runner will be ready to fire first up on the Gold Coast track over 1400m with the help of three strong carrier trials.
“She has settled in really well, we elected not to go to Doomben the other day when there was a lot of rain and it was probably the right decision,” he said. “Her trial was really sharp and she came through it well.”
Berry has been out of action in recent weeks after contracting Covid-19 however with Berry now fit to make the trip north, Price is confident he has the right man for the job.
“Tommy couldn’t be any happier and he loves the way she is going, he has been on her back a few times this prep and he certainly didn’t want to get off,” he said.
“You always need luck in races but T. Berry knows the Gold Coast track and he’s on the highest-rated filly in the race.”
Jamaea burst onto the scene earlier in 2021 after winning the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes in what many saw as an upset.
