Joao Moreira set for Sydney Spring
He’s one of the most recognisable names in the world of horse racing. Joao Moreira is set to begin his Australian Spring racing program on Wednesday with a handful of rides for Sydney Super trainer Chris Waller.
Moreira made a massive impact when he rode in Sydney during the Autumn Racing Carnival where he and fellow jockey James McDonald shared the Nathan Berry Medal for leading jockey during the Championships.
Moreira is currently riding in Japan and while he had a book of rides at Nakayama on Monday he has been booked on three Chris Waller runners set to go round at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
"Joao won't be out here for the whole spring carnival but if we are struggling (for jockeys) we will be trying to get him to Sydney," Waller said.
"But I think we will be trying to get him back for some of the peak days like the Golden Rose, Epsom and The Everest meetings."
The Magic Man partners Fightertown (race two), For Victory (race five) and Afterlight (race six) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday before switching attention to a big day of racing at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Moreira will take up his first Group One assignment of the Spring where he partners with Militarize in the Golden Rose.
The pair have partnered before to win the Sires' Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes in the autumn and are currently an $11 chance behind Godolphin trained Cylinder who leads the market at $3.50.
