Seen by many as a shock move, the 37 time Group One Winner will head to Hong Kong ready for the start of the 2022-23 season.
A surprise invite was given by the Hong Kong Jockey Club to Richards in a bid to bolster there diminishing training numbers after a substantial number of current trainers faced retirement at the mandatory stop point of 70.
Richards had been a focal point for the Kiwi training operation Te Akau Racing and he will leave a substantial gap in their current racing structure.
To cover the hole Te Akau have been quick to move Singapore based trainer Mark Walker back to New Zealand to take up the running of operations whilst fellow Te Akau trainer Donna Logan will move to Singapore and take on full time running of the racing operations there.
Richards had become a regular in Australian Horse racing in recent times with the Te Akau stable bringing several runners over to compete in the riches of Spring and Autumn Carnivals.
The likes of Te Akau Shark, Melody Belle and many others had graced the Australian shores in recent years claiming several black type and Group 1 racing titles along the way. Te Akau Shark’s win in the Chipping Norton Stakes will be a particular high point after beating Verry Elleegant to Group 1 success.
Jamie Richards will join David Hayes as one of the most recent trainers to head to Hong Kong.
