It was a true spectacle to watch as Peter Moody trained Incentivise won yet another Group 1 title when digging deep to see off Young Werther in the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m at Flemington.
Incentivise currently sits atop the pile in betting for both Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and was made to work for his second Group 1.
After the jump Incentivise received no peace in front of the pack with Mount Popa pressing all the way before the Cup favourite had to kick twice in the straight to first, see off the chasing pack and then second, a late charge from Young Werther down the outside.
It was an impressive performance by the fiver year old gelding who gapped race favourite Verry Elleegant, who had every chance in transit, but failed to fire when finishing 4th.
Making up the placings on the day was Chapada who finished third when running on strongly in the straight at $10.
Attention for the Moody team and Incentivise will now turn to the Group 1 Caulfield Cup in two weeks time over 2400m and said he was happy with the performance of his new stable star.
“We needed to have a good gallop and take improvement out of today. Now we go to the Caulfield Cup and Mount Popa made sure we had a good gallop.
“Brett thought that he wanted to be on the inside, he thought the inside was the best part of the track so he made endeavours to hold that so it ended up being a good test.
“Showed a lot of courage. He’s a bloody tough horse, isn’t he.”
Incentivise now sits as $2.30 favourite to win the Caulfield Cup
