All Star Mile favourite I’m Thunderstruck has begun the road to the $5m race by having his nomination entered for the 1600m feature held in March.
I’m Thunderstruck currently stands as Victoria’s best chance to win the race with the unique feature being won by Tasmania, Western Australia and New South Wales in recent years.
Trainer Michael Kent jr was enthusiastic about the Golden Eagle winners chances in the race suggesting that conditions would suit on the big track at Flemington.
“He’s the right horse and Flemington is his track,” Kent Jr said of the $5m prizemoney earner.
“Flemington is going to suit him better than Caulfield, that’s for sure.
“The world is his oyster.”
Connections to the horse will enjoy going through the selection process for a jockey to pilot I’m Thunderstruck with Hugh Bowman, Jye McNeil and Jamie Kah all having won aboard in previous starts.
I’m Thunderstruck was able to build on a valiant third in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when winning the Golden Eagle in impressive fashion.
“The most rewarding campaign, certainly that I’ve ever been involved in, it’s not often things come off but you need the team, the expertise and above all else you need the horse,” Kent Jr said.
“It was basically his second preparation … beating up on three-year-olds in winter and then to take that leap up to Group 1 handicap level and then go in the Golden Eagle.
“Every run wasn’t an easy run (either), he got poleaxed in the Rupert Clarke and still flashed home for third … they tried to bully him and lock him away in the Toorak.
“It was a courageous ride (by Jye McNeil) and even more courageous effort by the horse to weave his way through and win the Group 1 Toorak.
“Even in the Golden Eagle he got buffeted at the top of the straight, but Huey (Bowman) got him out and you somehow knew the horse would get there.
“It’s very exciting what may be at his third prep, we think he’ll get 2000m and that opens up more doors.”
I’m Thunderstruck currently sits on the first line of betting for the All Star Mile as a $6 favourite alongside Annabel Neasham trained Zaaki.
