Subterranean has a unusual knack of finding his best form when he races in Queensland and his trainer, Matt Dunn is confident that his talented runner is set to do the same again this weekend in the Group 3 Winx Guineas at the Sunshine Coast.
All three of Subterraneans wins have come in Queensland despite racing primarily in New South Wales where he is also stabled. The most recent was a resurgent win at Ipswich where he broke his most recent duck.
It was a strong win for Subterranean who took out the T.L Cooney over 1350m for his first win in 13 months. Prior to that we hadn’t seen the Dunn runner in the winners enclosure since winning the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast in May of last year.
Subterranean currently sits on the third line of betting for the Winx Guineas behind short priced favourite Battleton who represents the Bjorn Baker stable.
“Without doubt it’s a winnable race,” Dunn said.
“It looks like Bjorn’s horse is the one but if the rain comes I don’t think he likes it as much.
“Subterranean, it‘s not his best surface but he gets through it and has won on it before.
“If you take him (Battleton) out of the equation, Subterranean has probably got the rest covered on form.”
Veteran hoop Jim Byrne has been booked once again to ride Subterranean on the weekend where the pair will jump from barrier 12 with a field of 16 runners.
