186 NOMINATED FOR MELBOURNE CUP

The initial Melbourne Cup nominations are in and a total of 186 runners have been nominated for the 162nd running of the race that stops a nation with a number of strong contenders announced from the international arena

Cup runners nominated

The Melbourne Cup nominations include a sharp rise in the number of international runners with a total of 45 listed at this early stage. That marks a strong increase on the 15 that were nominated in 2021 where COVID restrictions impacted participation.

The market is currently led by a number of runners sitting on $15 in betting. Last years third place horse, Spanish Mission was one of those on the first line of betting after relocating down under to join the Peter Moody stable.

The other native on the top line of betting is the Edward Cummings trained Duais. The Australian Cup winner went to another level in the Autumn winning two Group Ones as well of replicating a long standing record by Makybe Diva.

Not to be left in the shadows, the Northern Hemisphere stables have four horses at the $15 price point including Hoo Ya Mal, Kyprios, Loft and New London. Kyprios in particular comes with a high regard having won the Ascot Gold Cup whilst defeating the great Stradivarius.

O’Brien still has a strong presence in the nominations with the champion Irish trainer entering six runners, including Aikhal, Bluegrass, Changingoftheguard, Point Lonsdale, United Nations and Waterville.

Son Joseph O’Brien has trumped him in terms of numbers with 10 entries - Baron Samedi, Benaud, Cleveland, Gear Up, Mater Of Reality, Okita Soushi, Point Gellibrand, Point King, Raise You and Temple Of Artemis.

The winner of the 2021 Melbourne Cup, Verry Ellegant won’t defend her title however her former trainer Chris Waller will have a strong hand in the race with 15 runners nominated to run on the first Tuesday of November.
