South Australian runners Behemoth and Beau Rossa ruled the roost in Victoria after Behemoth hung on to go back to back in the Memsie Stakes in the first Group 1 of the season at Caulfield on Saturday

Behemoth wins the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield

Behemoth, who won the race back in 2020, recorded his second win in the race for trainer David Jolly when broke clear in the final stages and narrowly held on from Beau Rossa in a tight finish.

The The Memsie Stakes came just two weeks after Behemoth and Beau Rossa had duelled it out in a thrilling Spring Stakes at Morphettville where the juvenile had been first across the line.

This time it would be Behemoth’s time to shine though as the big brute was first past the post with Beau Rossa arguably unlucky not to beat the Jolly runner once again when getting held up in the straight.

The South Australian pair were followed closely home by Group 1 winning Tofane who came charging late and looked in fine form once again heading into the Spring.

The quinella pairing were both late pick up rides for Brett Prebble and Linda Meech who both picked up runs as a result of the recent Covid-19 protocol scandal.

Brett Prebble’s win was all the more sweeter as well, given it was his first Victorian Group One win since Wandjina in the 2015 Australian Guineas after he returned to race in the state two years ago.

Elsewhere the feature race of the day in Sydney was the San Domenico Stakes at Group Three level which was won by In The Congo who put on a masterful front running display and held on from the fast finishing Paulele and Stay Inside to claim victory.
