The Group 3 event is for horses three years old and above who travel a distance of 2000 metres of the Belmont track under weight for age conditions. Level weights suit the above average horses who are generally the ones to look for when selecting a winner. The race is worth $200,000 to the winners, which has more often than not going to the stronger staying types who are among the top local talent.

The 1600 M Group 3 Hyperion Stakes held in June under the same conditions is usually a warm up race from where horses may fancy their chances in the Strickland Stakes.

Earlier, the Strickland Stakes used to be held in April. The first event was held in 1901 as the WATC December Stakes. It remained a principal race until its elevation to Group 3 in 1979. Among the notable gallopers to stamp their authority on the Strickland Stakes are Perfect Answer in 1989, Acquired in 1990, Summer Beau in 1998, Finito in 2001-02, Action Pak in 2008 and Perth star, Marasco, scored back to back victories in 2009-10.
