Winners and Past Results for the RJ Peters Handicap.
Hosted by Perth Racing during the spring racing carnival in November, the RJ Peters Stakes is a Group 3 race for horses three years old and above.
The event is run under quality handicap conditions over a distance of 1500 metres of Ascot Racecourse in Perth.
Prize money of $150,000 is up for grabs in a race that fields horses seeking to prove their mettle over longer mile races in the coming year. However, the RJ Peters Stakes also fields a number of horses that have already proved their ability to run the mile, leaving punters a good form guide.
The RJ Peters Stakes is the perfect lead up for the Perth summer racing carnival where horses may look forward to an opportunity to contest the 1600 M Group 1 Railway Stakes a week later and set the pace for the 1800 M Group 1 Kingston Town Classic at the same track in December. The 1400 M Group Lee Steere Stakes held at Belmont Park is another event that may be used as a warm up for this event.
The Group 2 CB Cox Stakes over 2100 metres and Perth Cup over 2400 metres at the Ascot track in December are also major races that several horses may contest after the RJ Peters Stakes. 2010 winner of the RJ Peters Stakes, God Has Spoken came back strongly the next year to win the CB Cox Stakes and finish second in the Perth Cup.
The Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes is one of the major events that lead up to the RJ Peters Stakes. In 2011, Tranquillity finished third in the Asian Beau Stakes followed by a close second in the RJ Peters Stakes. Grey Monarch followed Tranquillity closely in both events. Although the race features Western Australian talent, a few interstate competitors may fancy their chances as a lead up to Group 1 races at Ascot later in the season. One of the most notable milers and long distance specialists to win the RJ Peters Stakes among several races around the country was Northerly in 2000.
The RJ Peters Stakes was first run in 1905 as the WATC Plate, a principal race run over 6 furlongs. It remained a listed race between 1979 and 1985 after which it was elevated by Perth Racing to Group 3. It has been held as the RJ Peters Stakes ever since Northerly's victory in 2000.
