More Details About The Victory Stakes
The 2012 Victory Stakes was abandoned due to the state of the track after heavy rains.
The race is a weight for age race hosted by Brisbane Racing Club towards the end of April.
Horses, three years old and above, travel over 1200 metres of the Eagle Farm track in a bid to win $250,000 in prize money. The race usually attracts a mixed field of local gallopers with a few top class horses making their way through over the years as well.
Trainers prepare their above average sprinters for the Group 1 BTC Cup held over 1200 metres at Doomben Racecourse. While horses may use a variety of listed and group races as a warm up to the event, the 1100 M Group 1 James Boag Galaxy at Randwick is among the races to note.
A number of handy sprinters and middle distance runners have made their mark on the Victory Stakes, which includes Groucho in 1989. Rough Habit and Summer Beau in 1991 and 1998 respectively have also added the trophy to their kitty. Another horse to tackle weight for age company well during her short career is Only Words who won this race in 2004.
The first edition of the Victory Stakes in 1980 was a listed event won by Golden Rhapsody. It was elevated to Group 3 the next year and has been recognised as a Group 2 race since 1992. It has been held as the Victory Stakes since 2010. The race was not run in 2012 due to the state of the track due to heavy rains.
2022 Victory Stakes Details, Result and Recap
The 2022 Group 2 Victory Stakes were won by Count De Rupee, a four year old gelding trained by the stable of Robert and Luke Price. Count De Rupee was ridden to victory in the 2022 Victory Stakes by jockey Brock Ryan who won the 1200m weight for age contest in a time of 1 minute and 9 seconds.
Details Of The 2022 Victory Stakes
The 2022 Victory Stakes was supposed be the triumphant return of Rothfire for the Robert Heathcote stables after the four year old gelding had missed the past 18 months of racing with injuries that had kept him sidelined through the Spring and the Autumn Racing Carnivals.
Rothfire had been a red hot favourite coming into the race having been talked up as an Everest contender in previous seasons. Recent trials in the lead up to the 2022 Victory Stakes had the punters believing that Rothfire would return in top form for the race and be able to win the Group 2 contest.
Other hopefuls in the Victory Stakes at Doomben Racecourse in 2022 included Count De Rupee who entered the race for trainers Robert and Luke Price who lined up alongside stablemate Jamaea. Count De Rupee entered the race in good form having finishing second to Kementari in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick two weeks prior.
Also included was Rothfire’s stable mate Starantes who had been subject to a late scratching earlier in April after there was an issue with Robert Heathcote’s runners and there pre race medications. After being cleared Starantes was set to resume for Heathcote in the Group 2 Victory Stakes as an $11 chance in betting.
Overall though the Victory Stakes punters wanted to back Rothfire who lined up in the gates as a $1.90 chance and was expected to runaway with the Group 2 contest. Count De Rupee was on the second line of betting at $7.50, whilst Starantes sat on the third line at $11.00.

2022 Victory Stakes Race Recap
If all races followed the suit of the betting market then Rothfire should have been head and shoulders above the Group 2 Victory Stakes field. Trainer Robert Heathcote had said Rothfire was coming into the race in excellent condition having completed a number of recent trials and receiving positive comments from jockeys piloting the hit outs.
After the gates opened Scallopini jumped well and took an early front running position alongside Niccanova with Count De Rupee taking close order just off the speed. Rothfire was forced to work early from Gate 11 and was pushed forward under the ride of James Orman to take up the running of the Victory Stakes field.
As the runners approached the 800m marker Rothfire kicked two lengths clear under the ride of Orman. The Heathcote trained runner seemed to over race in the early stages and set a keen tempo on the race. It’s Me trucked along happily behind with Niccanova running third.
With runners round the home turn Orman found another gear and was able to kick clear of It’s Me and Niccanova however Count De Rupee and Scalopini appeared to be eating up the ground behind Rothfire who looked to be running out of steam. The rest of the field looked to be toiling on the Doomben surface leaving these three to fight out the finish.
Scalopini soon hit the lead and with Count De Rupee struggling to get past Rothfire it seemed to the be the Steven O’Dea trained runner that would win out. As soon as Count De Rupee found a gap jockey Brock Ryan was able to push through and win the Group 2 Victory Stakes in the final few strides.
Stablemate Jamaea was seen flying late to finish third with Starantes following suit to claim fourth ahead of the short price Rothfire who finished a disappointing fifth on returning after having to work early in front.
