Other races scheduled on the day are the Group 3 Chairman's Handicap and the Listed Hampden Stakes. The Group 2 Gunsynd Classic has proved to be a handy form guide in recent times. The 1600 metre race held at Eagle Farm a fortnight earlier is usually the route that many horses before the Rough Habit Plate.
The event is held in honour of New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse, Rough Habit, the winner of 11 Group 1 titles during his career which also included the Queensland Derby. Tenor is recorded as the first winner in 1996 while Dodge in 1998, Kincourt in 2000, and Russian Pearl in 2004 are among the notable stayers to win in recent times.
