Xtravagant Typical Three-Year-Old With Potential
Kiwi thoroughbreds typically call to mind the stayers that thrive at 2000m and beyond, but three-year-old Xtravagant has been limited to 1600m and under through the first nine races of his career. He is showing some of the temperamental three-year-old nature thus far, confounding punters with his tendency to either win or finish outside the placings. He has won five times so far produced one third, but his remaining three races found him mid-field.
His form so far indicates that he does not do well in soft conditions other than a win he posted in the October 2015 Guineas Trial at 1400m. He went on to win the G1 NZ 2000 Guineas next up on a good track.
Xtravagant did not look nearly so good when he was tried in the Australian Guineas at Headquarters, finishing eighth.
He was sent back to NZ for a bit of freshening and appears to be running in the G3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes at Te Rapa at the end of April. As for Xtravagant’s plans, he is likely to be in the G1 Doomben 10,000, followed by the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on 11 June. The bookies currently have him priced at $11 for the Stradbroke.
