Winx and Yankee Rose as Expected Tarzino Disappoints
The biggest surprise of day one on The Championships at Randwick was without doubt the win by Winx in the Doncaster mile.
Wait…Winx’s win did not catch anyone off guard. What was surprising is that some punters managed to get him at $1.85 and some big punts at $2.
Chris Waller’s star took jockey Hugh Bowman on a 1600m tour of Randwick that saw two lengths between them and second place finisher Happy Clapper with Brenton Avdulla aboard. That combination rewarded any punters wise enough to back them for the place.
Third place went to Azkadella and Glen Boss. Waller’s other two horses in the race, Good Project and Kermadec, finished seventh and dead last, respectively.
Yankee Rose took the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and punters who waited were rewarded when the filly drifted to $3.80 after having been priced earlier at $2.80. She ran away from Telperion in second and Faraway Town in third was literally faraway, 4.5 lengths back.
Tavago was the shock of the day. The Kiwi colt started the race at $31 and finished the race seven lengths before $1.65 favourite Tarzino made it to the line. Jameka finished second, followed by Tally. Both horses jumped at $8.
