Winx Wins Warwick Despite Jump Blunder Hartnell Wins Lawrence
The Group 2 Warwick Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday was certainly interesting. Apparently, Hugh Bowman neglected to tell Winx that the race had started. She trailed the field for most of the race and was still behind at the 100 m mark, although by that point, it was clear that her trademark burst would carry her to the post.
If there is justice in the world, Sydney’s might mare will ascend to the top of the world rankings, as the only horse above her, Arrogate, was beaten half-a-length by Collected in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, California.
It is, however, easy enough to observe that while there may be some justice in the world, there is also injustice, as Arrogate, runner of eight races for five wins, has out earned Winx by a considerable margin.
Meanwhile, James Cummings has proved to Goldolphin that he is worth every cent they are paying him, as Cummings’ strategy of running Hartnell wherever Winx is not running paid off with a win in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield. Hartnell won easily, showing his hindquarters to the sextet fielded by Darren Weir, whose best hope, Black Hart Bart, finished third, more than three lengths back.
Hartnell is a great horse, no doubt. He just has the misfortune of the bad timing of coming along just when a once-in-a-generation great came along. It is similar to the plight professional golfers experienced when Jack Nicklaus was in his prime or heavyweight boxers who had to deal with the presence of Muhammad Ali.
Winx had only seven brave enough to contest her in the Warwick Stakes. Watching her chase down all seven after her late wake-up call only served to show a level of class that is difficult to fathom, even after watching her round the last turn in dead last. Hopefully, the carpet burns from Darren Weir’s office on Bowman will be sufficiently healed when Winx next takes to the turf.
