Winx Wins 11th Straight Hartnell Fills Chelmsford/Hill Double
As expected, Winx was too good for any of the others in the field with her for the George Main Stakes Group 1 at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
It was her 11th win in a row after having a month off and she looked as though none of the others need bother showing up, unless it is second place they seek to secure, when she goes in the Caulfield Stakes in three weeks’ time. She did not exactly lap the field. Her jockey, Hugh Bowman, asked her for the minimum she needed in order to cross the line first.
In another Randwick race, the 2000 m Hill Stakes, it was Hartnell drawing the oohs and aahs from the spectators, winning by six lengths while easing at the end to beat Who Shot Thebarman and Storm The Stars in a dominant fashion that has caused his price to be shortened for the Caulfield Cup.
Harnell’s trainer John O’Shea, in typical trainer fashion, said that Hartnell ran well, but may have been in a field where his competitors were at less than their best.
Winx and Hartnell have been the dominant forces in weight-for-age races in the Sydney area this spring.
Futures betting has Winx at $2 and Hartnell at $9 for the Cox Plate, but it seems as though that clash is not in the offing, with Hartnell seemingly headed for the Caulfield Cup instead of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
