Winx is Two Trials Away from First Up Group 2 Warwick Stakes
After lolling about the stables and paddocks of trainer Chris Waller these past few months, Winx is set to step into the barrier for a trial just a few day hence. The trial will be held on the main track at Royal Randwick over 900 metres.
Speaking with Sky Racing, Waller, not Winx, said, “She’s good and we’re getting close now to her first-up run. It’ll probably be four weeks to Saturday so she has her first trial on Monday at Randwick. It’ll just be a soft trial. I don’t expect her to win or do anything special, she’ll just follow them around.”
She will trial once more, and then make her first up start in the 1400 m Group II Warwick Stakes at Randwick on August 19.
Waller feels that Winx is about as good as she could be. She might have put on a kilo or two, but once she rounds into top racing form, she will easily obtain her prime weight.
The primary target for Winx’s spring run will be her attempt to match Kingston Town and win a third consecutive Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Waller expressed satisfaction with Winx’s conditioning, which could only mean one thing: the rest of any field will get the best vantage point for a clear view of the tail section of the mighty mare.
Waller also told Sky Racing, “I couldn’t be happier. It’s just a matter of maintaining her, making sure she stays safe and holds her form.”
If racing conditions are similar to last autumn, bookies might have to charge punters to wager on her. In February, March and April, she won the last three of her 17 consecutive on soft and heavy tracks. She has elevated the term “mudder” to a new level, so it might be possible to catch Waller at the track in the wee small hours, soaking things down.
