Winx Status Unknown for QE Stakes
By the time you read this, things may have changed, but for the next several hours, Racing NSW stewards have suspended betting on the 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes until a decision regarding whether Winx will run is made.
Trainer Chris Waller is pondering the decision, perhaps out of concern over racing Winx so soon after winning the Doncaster Mile.
Stewards suspended betting in order to preserve the integrity of wagering. As of this writing, it is just over three hours until acceptances are due for the race.
The uncertainty highlights how the expense of obtaining and preparing a thoroughbred, along with the big prize money at stake, has changed the philosophy of owners and trainers over the years.
In the days of Tulloch or Phar Lap, the question would not be whether a horse would enter a race a week subsequent to having won or competed, but if it were possible to find a race or two in the interim.
No one can truly blame Waller for looking out for Winx’s best interests. She is one of those once-or-twice-in-a-lifetime horses that can define a trainer’s career. A mistake perceived as coming about as a result of overwork could seriously affect Waller’s future prospects.
