Winx to Remain on Domestic Metropolitan Tracks Next Year
Recent speculation that Super Mare Winx might travel abroad to do a little racing has been laid to rest by her trainer, Chris Waller.
Waller indicated that Winx will be tired eight times in the next year, and feels that keeping her in familiar surroundings, rather than subjecting her to two weeks of travel and quarantine, is in the best interests of the horse.
He did not completely rule out an overseas jaunt in the future, but his plan appears to contain solid logic. After all, Winx is providing a nice return on her investment and likely has at least one season, and given her results, probably two remaining, and she would have to be considered a favourite to equal the three consecutive Cox Plate wins posted by Kingston Town in 1980 – 1982, the only horse to win thrice in the 96 times the race has been contested.
Her win this year places her in the company of So You Think, Northerly, Sunline, Tobin Bronze, Hydrogen, Flight, Tranquil Star, Beau Vite, Young Idea and Chatham.
The first to win two Cox Plates was Phar Lap, in 1930 and 1931, so when we guarantee that Winx is destined for the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, we have little fear of contradiction.
