Winx Out of QE Stakes The United States Early Favourite
It is now official. Winx will not be in the field for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday.
Sydney’s richest race will have to muddle by without her, leaving her stablemate Preferment to carry the Chris Waller Stables banner, along with Weary. The two will start side-by-side from barriers five and six and both were given 59 kg. Jockey Hugh Bowman will take the ride on Preferment and Craig Williams will steer Weary.
Preferment won her last start, the G1 BMW at Rosehill with Bowman aboard.
Early betting shows The United States, the six-year-old from Ireland that showed up in Australia in 2014, as the favourite, followed by Preferment, Hauraki, Lucia Valentina and last year’s QE Stakes winner Criterion.
Waller seems to be neck-deep in quality horses at the moment, so the decision not to run Winx on a week’s rest did not completely surprise anyone, even though speculation caused Racing NSW stewards to suspend wagering pending Winx’s status.
The United States will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy. They were given the identical 59 kgs. of Preferment and Criterion and will jump from barrier eight, so it seems to be shaping up at a race that will be determined without any exceptional circumstances involved.
