Winx and Kermadec Favourites in Doncaster
Trainer Chris Waller is certainly finding himself in a good place at the moment, with his charges Winx (57 kg) and Kermadec (59 kg) taking the first two positions in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill.
Winx was coming off a short three-week freshening after winning the William Reid. Kermadec won last year’s Doncaster and he and Winx are prohibitive favourites for this year’s Doncaster on 1 April.
The only fools will be those who bet on any of the other runners. Sportsbet has Winx at $2 at the moment, with Kermadec a distant $7.50. Happy Clapper at $10 and First Seal at $11 could conceivably place, provided they run.
Winx and Kermadec had combined prize money earning or roughly $8 million, even though they have just 33 starts.
Winx has made a meteoric rise since managing only a fifth in last year’s Vinery Stud. Waller described her as just another three-year-old Group filly and a good Group 2 horse. He may have been starting to hum a different tune when she took the Queensland Oaks at the end of May 2015, but he would have been in full voice singing the mare’s praises when she took out the Cox Plate in October directly following her Epson Handicap win earlier in the month.
