Winx Heavy Favourite for Group 2 Warwick Stakes
Sometimes, the story writes itself, but none of we grossly overcompensated scribes would ever freely admit that fact, yet a recent comment by Winx jockey Hugh Bowman more or less seems like an admission that he is just along for the ride.
Winx is going to return to the track for Saturday’s Group 2 Warwick Stakes over 1400 m at Randwick and has gone on record as saying that if Winx runs to the front early due to a lack of pace from the field, he will not prevent the mighty mare from doing so.
Winx has never led the field in any of her runs and the only time she was near the lead, in last year’s Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes, she settled second behind Earthquake, only to be overtaken by First Seal to leave her in second at the finish.
Bowman thinks that the field is going to loiter in the upcoming Warwick Stakes and that the lack of pace might necessitate Winx running from the front. Bowman has a great deal of confidence in Winx from the perspective that he notices that she has matured physically in terms of her musculature, which if true, bodes ill for any competitors alongside her in the 2016 – 2017 racing season.
The last time Winx ran at Randwick in April, she won the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, beating Happy Clapper, even though she gave that horse a six-kilogram advantage and six and a half kilograms to third place finisher Azkadellia.
