Winx Getting Shorter by the Moment
The opening markets on the final field for the Doncaster Mile show Winx as low as $1.80 and no better than $2, even though she has barrier 11 and will be carrying 56.5 kg., just half a kilogram lower than the top weight 57 kg. given to her stablemate Kermadec and Murray Baker’s Turn Me Loose.
Kermadec in barrier three ranges from $6.50 to $7 and Happy Clapper jumping from barrier eight at $10 are the only horses within odds viewing distance of the favourite Winx. Glen Boss, taking the ride for Ciaron Maher aboard Azkadellia ($11-$15) hopes to use the light 50 kg. to get a jump on Winx coming out of barrier 12.
Chris Waller’s third runner, Good Project was given only 52 kg, and drew barrier seven, but even though he won the Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot in 2015, his prospects in the Doncaster are only $21 on the low end.
Gai Waterhouse is running Ecuador from the 14th barrier with 52 kg. and long odds. The kiwi product has six wins to his credit, but nothing better than a second in last year’s Epson Handicap at the Group 1 level.
