Winx Catches Phar Lap Sets Sights on Carbine and Bernborough
For all her apparent ability and intelligence, Winx, either unaware or unconcerned over the requirement that she wait 48 hours to run the Group 2 Apollo Stakes due to scorching temperatures, won on Monday at Randwick with ease.
In so doing, she equaled the win streak of none other than Phar Lap and now has her sights set on Carbine and Bernborough.
Whew! Simply writing those three names in the same sentence has our hearts aflutter and we can only imagine the physical effect had we mentioned them in the same breath.
It would seem as though the biggest issue she has to confront for the time is finding anyone to run against her, as trainers and owners are flocking to the exits rather than risk their horses’ self-esteem in hopeless situations.
Were she able to sing, she would have caused a mega-diva reaction at last night’s Grammy Awards by taking Adele’s five trophies away from her and adding them to her own (Winx’s) trophy case.
Winx needs only to win one more time to catch Carbine and Bernborough. Trainer Chris Waller said he was aware of the stakes in the race to catch Phar Lap, but he was willing to admit that Winx is not given anything even remotely close to Phar Lap in terms of workload.
In the Apollo, only Hartnell was able to remain on the same lap with her, watching from nearly three lengths back.
