Winx Autumn Debut in Group 2 Apollo Stakes at Caulfield
News that Chris Waller will have no fewer than six horses in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at Caulfield Saturday next ought to be enough to re-raise the issue of placing some sort of limit on the number of horses one trainer can have in any one race.
The 1400 m Apollo Stakes will be the autumn debut for Winx, Waller’s super-mare that has acquired an air of invincibility over the summer spell, such that she is priced at $1.60. She had originally been the $2 favourite, but once Waller pulled Boban’s nomination to save that horse for the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes, and then made the decision to run Press Statement elsewhere, Winx shortened to the point of absurdity she now occupies.
Sportsbet currently shows a field of 15 for Winx’s return to the turf, but with Boban listed as unlikely, it could be 14 or others could be added.
Solicit is next in favourtism at $4.60. The Gerald Ryan prepared six-year-old mare has had a solid, if not exactly spectacular career, and was second to Winx in the Apollo Stakes last year.
Winx is seeking to become just the second mare to win two Apollo Stakes by joining 2000 – 2001 winner Sunline.
Hartnell may be in the race, but that has yet to be definitively confirmed.
