Winx Attempts to Tie Black Caviar with 25 Consecutive Saturday
Despite winning the Group 1 Doncaster Mile last Saturday, punters have failed to back Happy Clapper in sufficient numbers or sufficient wagers to prevent him from lengthening from $12 when the market opened to the $16 price he currently carries of Ladbrokes.
Nine horses intend to show up at Randwick on Saturday to test Winx in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000 m).
Humidor is given the best chance at $11 and he and jockey Blake Shinn will jump from the rail. Next comes Gailo Chop, whose price has been choppy, varying between $12 and $14, where it currently stands.
Next comes the aforementioned Happy Clapper. Why he has drifted out is unclear, but he and Kerrin McEvoy will be able to mark Winx well, as they are starting alongside her barrier 10, having drawn the ninth slot. It could be a case that punters think him fatigued after having run just last weekend, although the workload of modern thoroughbreds, compared to some famous predecessors, such as Tulloch or Phar Lap, pales by comparison.
As things stand, if all 10 horses listed for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes jumps, each one will make something from the race.
When Winx won the race last year, second placer Hartnell earned $760,00 for his casual gallop and third placer Sense Of Occasion took in $400,000, so trainers are well aware that there is a nice payday to be had. Last year’s field had only seven racers, so $100,000 went unclaimed. With 10th place in this year’s race worth $30,000, it is not so likely than any late scratchings will be expected, unless veterinary issues become evident.
Of the remaining horses in the field, Ambitious carries a quote of $26 and both Success Days and Comin’ Through are worth $34 for a win bet, so punters looking to find a worthwhile exotic have some nice picks, particularly given that the win pick seems to be as easy as they come.
