Winx at Group 1 George Main Stakes this Weekend Seeding No. 27
Reliable sources indicate that Winx will have 62 challengers in the Group 1 2018 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Let them start running today and watch her run them down in the final 200 metres on 27 October.
The question that occurs naturally is where is Waller going to get 31 other horses to reach his typical position of supplying half the field?
We saw the Randwick trainer’s name beside only eight of the nominations, but since the field for the Cox Plate is limited to 14 plus four emergencies, it would appear that Waller could winnow his list down to seven by the 18 October deadline for acceptances.
Winx can get in the race at 57 kg, which seems almost a travesty. The list of horses that will have a weight advantage is short. One of those is Waller’s The Autumn Sun at 49.5 kg.
Darren Weir has nominated seven to run. Other trainers have multiple nominations, as well, and by our count, 37 of the nominees are from outside Australia.
The Cox Plate is beginning to overshadow the other spring carnival races and it almost seems as though The Everest (October 13) and the Melbourne Cup are afterthoughts.
Only the hardcore racing punters will be paying much heed to most of the other feature races during the 2018 spring racing carnivals.
Following this weekend, when most eyes will be on the Group 1 George Main Stakes, a search of the markets for the race found Neds offering Winx at $1.15, with the next two, Comin Through and Unforgotten, carrying $14 quotes.
Risk averse punters can back Winx to place at $1.01, which is to say, bettors who make that wager will be paying after Neds’ margins are calculated.
Save some money for the rest of September, as there are seven more Group 1 races that will offer profitable bets at Randwick, Rosehill, Moonee Valley and Caulfield.
