Widden Stud Bargain Yankee Rose Leads Impressive Crop
With the Group 1 Australian thoroughbred racing season now concluded, here is some news regarding the efforts of some of the various breeders who fielded horses in the most prestigious category of races during the season past.
Widden Stud was behind four Group 1 winners, those being Stratum Star, Vanbrugh, Prized Icon and Yankee Rose.
Yankee Rose was the bargain of the crop. The two-year-old filly of All American and Condessar was purchased for $10,000 by Darby Racing, and then given to trainer David Vandyke for racing preparations.
When she won the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes and finished second in the Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper, counting her first two races at Rosehill as well, she had won three of four and returned almost $1.5 million to her baker’s dozen group of owners.
Widden Stud based sire also produced Group 1 winners.
Group 1 Caulfield Stakes winner Criterion’s father was Sebring and the less fortunate Northern Meteor, a victim of colic in 2013, was responsible for ATC Flight Stakes winner Speak Fondly. Northern Meteor’s best son, two-time Group 1 race winner Zoustar, is back at Widden after spending some time at the Woodside Park Stud in Victoria.
