Weir’s Mahuta to Run Bletchingly Stakes With Eye Toward Memsie
The countdown to the last Group race of the year is underway, as the 1200 m Group 3 weight for age Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield marks a short interval before the 2016 – 2017 Group racing season debuts the first weekend of August when the Group 3 Auries Star Handicap will jump at Flemington.
Trainer Darren Weir plans to return his stakes-winning colt Mahuta to the turf. Mahuta has not raced since March, when he missed the podium entirely in the Australian Guineas.
The horse had a good season, notching six wins in nine attempts, and Weir wants to have him ready for the first Group 1 race of the new season, the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.
During the interval betwixt the Bletchingly and the Memsie, Mahuta will try the P B Lawrence Stakes in order to be in racing form for the Memsie.
Mahuta has yet to prove his credentials at the Group 1 level. Not only did he not place in the Australian Guineas, he ran 14th, the sort of result that could potentially have relegated him to lessor races for the term of his career. He has performed more than adequately at Group 2 level, winning the Sandown Guineas and the Autumn Stakes.
