Weir Will Not Risk All Aged Favourite Bart Unless Randwick Surface Firms
Randwick racecourse actually improved for Saturday’s big meeting this past weekend, if going up to soft seven is anything other than wishful thinking.
This week, however, showers are predicted for every day, which has Victorian trainer Darren Weir expressing doubts about how badly he wants to run five-time Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart in the upcoming All Aged Stakes.
The 1400 m Group 1 All Aged Stakes has a compelling factor that many trainers will be considering as the race approaches. Winx will not be in the field.
Yet, Weir knows that Bart is not keen to run on a heavy surface.
It took until last month for Weir to taste success in Sydney when Big Duke won the Group 3 Manion Cup at Rosehill. Big Duke seemed well positioned to hand Weir a first Sydney Group 1 before the Sydney Cup was abandoned due to the poor track.
If Bart does line up on Saturday, he might see a field with Le Romain, English and others, but Weir is adamant that he will not risk Bart, recent winner of the Futurity and the C. F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield his last two times out, on a dodgy surface.
Bart is currently priced favourite at $4, with English and Le Romain at $4.60.
