Weir to Field Six at Caulfield for P.B. Lawrence Stakes Saturday
Strength in numbers seems to be the thinking behind trainer Darren Weir’s decision to submit six nominations for Saturday’s 1400 m Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield. The gang of Weir is headed by Black Hart Bart, Tosen Stardom, Humidor, Storme Exhibit, Amelie’s Star and Gailo Chop.
Weir expressed some doubt that any of his gallopers, good horses all, have what it takes to get past Cox Plate runner-up and third placed Melbourne Cup Hartnell. He told the Herald Sun, “I’ll probably start all of them at this stage and I’m looking forward to the day. Probably the sad part is that I’m not sure any of them are wound up to win. But they’re all really good horses and good horses can often pull out great runs.”
Black Hart Bart (BHB) and Humidor would seem to have the best shot at running by Hartnell, but the seven-year-old Hartnell, now under the keen eye of James Cummings, head of the Godolphin’s operation in Australia, was looking formidable during a Caulfield gallop earlier in the week. Hartnell is Cummings’ only runner in the PB Lawrence Stakes and will jump from the ninth barrier.
BHB will come out of the fifth slot carrying Brad Rawiller and Humidor has drawn well, coming from slot three. Weir has Amelie’s Star jumping on the rail with a two-kilogram weight advantage over most of the field, save for Abbey Marri at the same weight and Montoya’s Secret at 56.5.
With two days to go until the race, BHB is currently a $3.00 favourite according to Ladbrokes, while Hartnell’s quote on the fixed win market is $3.70.
Close in the betting market at the moment is Lankan Rupee, but that horse, according to recent news, will be in South Australia at Morphettville for the Group 3 Spring Stakes.
